How to Develop Leadership Skills in Kids Aged 3-10 Years?

Leadership is the way in which an individual influences and or inspires the other person or a team member to achieve a common goal.

Not only do adults practice leadership skills but kids of all ages get influenced by their peer group, classmates, Teachers, etc. to behave and work in a certain way to perform better. For example, a child who is a sports player, let’s say football or basketball, The team which he or she plays will have a captain, Captains are chosen because they perform better than others or they may have better-delegating qualities, hence, the other team members start looking up to that Kid as he becomes the inspiration for them to achieve a desired goal and perform better so that they can also be a Captain of the team someday.

Leaders can be made by putting in some hard work as very well-phrased by, the legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi, “Leaders are not born, they're made.”

There is no fixed way to develop leadership skills in kids, but we can provide a nurturing environment to them which will help in developing the same with practical application. A few of them are listed below:

#1. Volunteering: The kid should be given the freedom to choose a Volunteer from activities as this gives them space to develop critical thinking and find a solution to the real-world problem before them. They learn how to be of service to people other than their Family and friends.

#2. Work on Communication Skills: They should be given freedom to express themselves rather than trying to impose the opinions of elders. So, if a kid is adamant about getting a similar toy as his/her friend, we should communicate and understand the “why” behind it. This gives the kid enough room to develop emotional intelligence.

#3. Allow them to make decisions for themselves: Children who understand themselves and follow their passions and interests are likely to be better leaders as they can then perform better and motivate others for their passion as well.

#4. Nurture entrepreneurship and hard work: Developing resilience and gratefulness is an important life skill. When kids are not afraid of failing and are persistent, they learn faster and try again, rather than dwelling on unsuccessful attempts.

#5. Inculcate Teamwork:  Working in teams gives kids more room to develop Leadership Skills. The teamwork could be as simple as helping parents with their daily chores or participating in activities in a group. This helps in building a natural talent for accomplishing a group goal.

#6. Set a Good Example – Last but surely the most important one, a child’s first teachers are the Parents, so the Parents should be “Authoritative” in their parenting style so that they can rationally direct the child and not make him/her feel strangled and controlled in a situation.
