Anxiety affects everyone in different ways and is a natural way for one’s body to respond to stress. This can be triggered by a small incident or a big life-threatening issue as well. Also, it may last for a few minutes to maybe 6 months or more. However, if it lasts for a longer period, it means the person is battling an anxiety disorder and would need professional help.
Anxiety issues have drastically increased among the youth and few common reasons have been identified for the same.
Below listed are the reasons and their possible remedies:-
1. Academic Pressure - The intense focus on academic success and the pressure to excel in competitive exams like JEE, NEET, and board exams can lead to immense stress.
Remedy – Parents should try and communicate with the child to make them feel comfortable and understand that competition is good in a healthy way and should not affect the health of the child. Also, the child needs to understand that the parents will be there to support him/her in all circumstances.
2. Peer Pressure - The peer pressure can be positive or negative. Positive pressure pushes one to perform in a better way and negative pressure is when someone makes you feel unaccepted amongst the group. The pressure to fit in among friends is the second major cause of anxiety among the youth.
Remedy – It is essential to understand oneself as to what is triggering the anxiety level in us. We should try and communicate with the person who is responsible for this, to work out the solution. Having friends with similar belief and values helps us be ourselves and also support us in our time of need.
3. Escaping through technology – Easy and continuous access to the internet and social media has presented many new challenges for youngsters growing up in the digital age. Studies show that children in the millennia have been conditioned to avoid discomfort by using electronic gadgets. Gaming and social media have replaced opportunities to build resilience and mental strength, thus, children haven’t gained the skills required to cope and handle everyday challenges.
Remedy – One should focus on limiting the screen time and plan on setting the exact time of accessing the screen. Before sleeping the gadgets should be put away from the room so there is no disturbance. Regular exercise routines should be maintained to keep oneself active and healthy.
4. Parental Disapproval - It’s natural for teens to feel stressed and anxious when they meet Parental Disapproval for a particular action. At the same time, they continue with actions that their Parents would not allow them to do. This is an inevitable and inherited stage of development, but it is stressful for everyone involved.
Remedy – Expressing oneself calmly and openly with the parents might be a great help. We can always communicate with parents and understand their point of view for the disapproval. Seek compromise to both, the parents as well the child are in a win-win situation. The Teen must show some responsibility so that there is some trust that builds in the Parents.
5. Drinking and Drug Use – Several Teens experiment with alcohol and drugs in some cases. This is generally because of Societal acceptance due to Peer Pressure. Many of them get addicted making it worse and adding on to anxiety disorder.
Remedy - If somebody has realized that there is an addiction to alcohol or drugs then immediate action should be taken to overcome the issue. The earlier we address this, the better it is. If the addiction is too much then professional help should be taken without any hesitation, however, if the family feels they can help the person, then it should be done without making any judgments. Identifying the triggers, Healthy lifestyle changes, Meditation, and joining some hobby classes are a few of the ways of dealing with a situation like this.
Conclusion:
The above-mentioned causes and remedies are just a few examples, however, there can be more issues like these and might need immediate help depending on person to person. We should always be vigilant and ready to support if we come across anyone seeking help.
